Breast Bone Cabinet
Inspired by the sweep of a rib cage, the Breast Bone Cabinet was an exercise in pushing inspiration from superficial ornamentation to core concept. The tambour doors, initially envisioned as hinged panels, allowed for the compounding curvature that captures the volume of the rib cage. Graduating hollows in the center of the wooden ribs and the light stance of the base contribute to a levity and organic quality, while natural pitting that occurred in the cast bronze handles mimics the porous nature of bones. The black milk paint shrouds the hidden warmth of natural wood that exists inside the form.
In order to ensure the curvature of the panel was continuous, each strip of the tambour was cut prior to sculpting. This presented a challenge in ensuring none of the strips could move and all were perfectly aligned while the sculpting took place. The projection of the doors also presented a unique challenge in regards to carcass construction. A false back was utilized to allow the doors to disappear without a visual interruption from the interior of the cabinet.
