Hawser Bed

The Hawser Bed started with a desire to design a bed frame that broke out of a rectilinear construction and flowed from one transition to another. Having previously employed papercord in the more standard role of a chair seat, I was eager to take advantage of its properties to flex, mold, and support in the context of a headboard. With so few flat or straight reference points to work off of, fabrication of the headboard required extensive use of templates and jigs. Laser-cut chipboard and acrylic, 3D printed models, and test cuts in secondary materials were all utilized to perfect the scale and fit of the components.

A hawser is a thick rope or cable intended for mooring or towing; it is a means of anchoring, yet possesses a latent energy.
